review 1: For years I have stated my political point of view as "extreme moderate." Naturally the Centrist Manifesto appealed. It did not disappoint. Charles Wheelan lays out a plan and basic platform for a third U.S. party. The Centrist Party would take the best ideas from each party, put them together and build something new. From the Republican party things like a respect for markets and wealth creation, belief in personal responsibility, understanding of the economic costs of taxes and regulation, healthy skepticism of what government can and can't accomplish. From the Democratic party things like concern for working people, commitment to strong social safety net, social tolerance, concern for environment, recognition that government can play an important role in reigning in cap... moreitalism. Wheelan expands on the above ideas and then proposes a feasible way for a Centrist Party to gain power -- by electing a handful of Centrist senators who can, and will, use their positions as moderates to reign in the extremes of both parties. This is a short, but very interesting, read.
review 2: Wheelan's latest makes me optimistic about the opportunity, though as of yet latent, demand to reform our national political discourse. A vision to achieve this audacious vision, of electing a few centrist candidates to the US Senate is appropriately audacious but...less likely scenarios have become realized, so I won't dismiss this one. Wheelan's style is approachable, even funny at times, and consistently straight forward: we need an insurgency of the rational and the electoral idiosyncrasies of how we elect Senators makes that possible. less
