review 1: Warning: spoilers and possibly some bad attitude. I went back and read the first book in this series before reading this one, I was so tickled, I hadn’t even realized this had been turned into a series at all! But perhaps that also should serve as a warning for future readers; don’t read this book one after the other, these books are best read with time in between each volume. The reason? Inconsistencies. I’m frustrated that things are off from the first book to the second, and its one of those things, like people talking in a movie theater, that’s hard for me to ignore. I did enjoy the North Pole setting, I love the way everyone talks! Even cursing is funny because they say things like ‘the holly he would!’ Charming! We get a lot of HEA at the start of the boo... morek which I enjoyed (though you need adversity to make the story interesting, so it was almost a bit too much), and we get time with the two lovers together before tragedy of a sort strikes. Then, the moment I was really waiting for; the flashback back to when the two met is told, but in narration instead of remembrance. And this is one of those places where those inconsistencies pop up. I hate when the author sets up something in the first story and then tries to change it or ‘clarify’ it in the second. In the first book we are told that Jack and Rudy met when Jack was his flight instructor, and we get the impression of a hate to love, falling for the tough mentor sort of storyline. But the backstory tells us something different. Apparently Rudy didn’t go to flight school, Santa asked cold hearted Jack who was a jerk to all to teach Rudy to fly. Then in the third book (I know, I’m getting ahead) Rudy says he and Jack knew each other as boys, but when they met up again it was like Jack had forgotten him due to circumstances. Contrivance! And it detracts from the story! And in the set up for book three we get a peak of a naughty teasing Vixen and a stiff but smitten Vale, but in book 3 neither character is nearly as much fun. I was excited for Jack and Rudy’s story, but maybe my expectations were too high, because while I like this author I don’t feel that this story did the couple justice. So while I wish I could gush like a fan girl for this book like a lot of others are (and maybe I’m taking it a bit too seriously) I overall enjoyed this, but it left a bit of a bad taste in my mouth.
review 2: This M/M Christmas romance is the second book in the North Pole City series.Jack Frost is the General of the Toy Soldiers, as well as being the Prince of Frost and a magical person. Like all the enchanted residents of this Winterland world he is hundreds of years old. Jack has had a clandestine relationship with Rudy, Captain of Mayor Kringle's Rein Dear pilots for the last two centuries. It was Rudy who melted Jack's frozen heart after the big war, and they fit together--Jack's strength and moodiness balanced by Rudy's good-temper. They recently "came out" and, well, there's lots of turmoil as a result. First, The King of Frost isn't happy. And, it seems SOMEONE has devised a plot to remove Rudy as a problem. A black magic attack has Jack in fits, as his heart ices. Thing is, as the old tale tells, there is some special magic in Rudy, and his love is again necessary to save Jack from the coldness that lurks within him. This is a fast-paced tale with the barest hint of M/M loving. less
