The Auspicious Troubles of Love
review 1: I am really enjoying this series. I'm not sure how realistic it is to have a motley crew of men and boys living in an English estate as a family, but it is certainly nice to think it could happen in that time period. Regardless, this is the story of Johnnie, told from his POV, a man still trying to live with his past trauma and abuse and start a new life with Jacky and Chance; the couple from the 1st book, as the paternal and "maternal" sort of figures. Henry has been waiting for Johnny to admit their love for 8 years; wow that is dedication for you. But for that time period, really not that surprising. Joining their story are additional "brats" and they are just great. I can see a few of them getting their own story. But still Jacky and Chance are prominent figures... more in this story and I hope the others. Overall I loved it.
review 2: I read the first book in the series, so I knew not to expect an accurate historical romance. It's more of a fairytale. In some great English manor six queer men founded a family and provided a shelter for young boys who had suffered because of their sexuality. When the book begins we have 7 brats living in the manor. The two MC are ones of the adults. They have loved each other for years, but their insecurities kept them apart. One kiss, performed as a dare, gets them finally acting on the attraction. The book is an emotional roller-coaster. There is a lot of angst, some exaggerated drama, sweat love, steamy sex and mischievous children. It's a perfect story to lift your mood on some rainy day. less
