review 1: I don't know why Goodreads has the German version as the only available one (the same isbn, apparently) but in English, this book is called 'Wetlands' & it just came out as a hyped arthouse movie. Lots of focus has been for the 'transgressive' protagonist, who is a bit fucked up about hygiene, sex, & personal safety. Yeah, it's a bit weird. But it's also compelling. Helen is a very complex and often unlikeable character and her world view is fascinating, unsettling, & completely convincing. I actually really loved it and was completely fascinated by the character & her brittle sanity. & all the attention on her 'transgressive' body relationship is kind of ridiculous. The horrifying parts of this book are completely authentic. It's not shock for shock value, which is frank... morely very rare & should be celebrated. I've read crime fiction that grossed me out more. In fact, that's probably why I don't read crime fiction. This is a thoroughly crafted & holistically imagined story. It's edgy, unusual, & completely original. Recommended.
review 2: I'm indifferent really. I didn't really find the novel to be outrageously explicit or gross, as many have found it. I actually found it a bit depressing, as it read more like a manifesto of a mentally ill person screaming for help, rather than one that was some sort of feminist sexual revolution. I honestly cannot see how this is being interpreted as a woman taking charge of herself and her sexuality. I see a teenage girl acting out because of a fucked up family life, and is desperate for love, validation, and attention. She's not doing these things out of some sense of empowerment, but as a reaction to what happened in her childhood, and quite possibly due to genetics. It's definitely worth reading, but not for those with weak stomachs. less

Very weird, sometimes charmingly so, but mostly hideously so. Yet... hmmm, well I don't know.

Funny, real, honest, at times too gross for words. Helen is charming despite it all.
