review 1: A hugely important book every Australian should read. Especially us 'Southerners'. Our sense of outrage about the treatment of Aboriginal people, both now and in the past, can easily fade as we go about our blessed lives. But we should never forget the hardships and injustice that has shaped all their lives for the past two hundred years when forming opinions, voting or simply asking ourselves: what can I do to facilitate change?
review 2: Really good nonfiction account of an aboriginal death in police custody. The dynamics between the groups, the riots, the way the cops banded together like hooligans, the strife and abject poverty of the aboriginals on the former mission Palm Island. Amazing. ... moreeer they had before lunch, but they also drank methylated spirits--alcohol that has poison added so that it should only be used for industrial purposes. This is a story with no right or wrong answers, and the author paints a really good portrait of the shades of grey. less
