review 1: Incredible look into the murder of an aborigine man in a Palm Island prison. It is also much more than that. It is a glimpse into Australian society that's unbiased and highly nuanced. This is a story of the legacy of the lost generation and the repercussions. In case you ever despair there is real magic in the writing. Chloe Hooper is a novelist and she brings a novelists sense of story and poetry and character to her non fiction work.
review 2: I read this years ago and still find myself returning to the novel on a regular basis. ... moregely immune to the lives of many indigenous Australians, all we hear are the biased reports on the news. Therefore reading Hooper's novel was an eye opener and a glimpse into Australia and the problems at it's core. What is so obvious and perhaps most painful in the novel is the overwhelming sense of helplessness from the Aboriginal people. The ongoing issues in aboriginal societies are discusses - alcohol, disease, abuse, unemployment and there truly seems no way out for these people. They seem stuck, trapped and Hooper makes it very clear that there are no simple answer and at times, no way out and that's what is most chilling about Hooper's account you finish feeling horrible feeling for these people who have no way out of a terrible situation. less
