review 1: If I could figure out how to give half stars, I'd have given this book 3.5, but as I can't, I rounded up to 4. Not quite creepy enough for horror or twisty enough to be a thriller, this book settles mostly on mystery with some bizarre elements. A South African doctor with a sordid past rooted in apartheid teams up with an almost retired police detective to investigate a murder where the prime suspect is conjoined twins from a freak show. I found s... moreome of the connections difficult at first but finally the narrative, characters, settings, and ideas and images in the writing prevailed.
