review 1: Two/three star review because even though this book has an interesting premise and a seemed promising I found myself rolling my eyes (not in a good way) throughout the book at bits of the dialog, the implausibility of some scenarios, and at the repetitive nature of some passages. I read the approximate phrase "and then my wife and I said our morning/ evening prayers" what felt like dozens of times. I get it, he's "religious" and contradictory and human.
review 2: The author has great ideas drawing on the deluded teenage twi-hard culture, the contradictions between Muslim adherence and living a modern life and even stealing a plot point from the movie 12 monkeys but then he simply dances round them. he does no more than mention them and adds no flesh to their bo
... morenes. I didn't care about any character even the protagonist especially as his actions often made no sense (worrying about being hungry whilst his family are in mortal peril). there were moments that I am sure where supposed to be the great reveal but the characters are so poorly fleshed out that you felt nothing at their betrayal and no ones motives are ever properly revealed. less
