review 1: I bought three of these books as soon as they were available. As per my expectations, Your Personal Paleo Code provides great information for people who would like to completely overhaul their diet or those who just want to tweak it a bit. The suggestions in it could help people transition from the GAPS diet: Or introduce them to the GAPS diet that they may have felt was too overwhelming. The suggestions in this book seem doable for the average person. Chris Kresser critically evaluates all of the research cited in his podcasts and lectures; this book is no exception. Great information and an easy read.
review 2: Despite the five star rating, I am critical of certain aspects of the book, but overall I was very impressed with the amount of research and how easy
... moreand engaging it was to read about nutritional value. The book has a very clear structure with many paragraphs under two pages that make it easy to keep going, because you constantly feel you've learned something new, and want to learn more. The scientific backbone of this book is its major appeal. The approach to food (and lifestyle) comes from a logical starting point (if hunter-gatherers -both ancient and contemporary- don't suffer from modern degenerative diseases, maybe we should adopt their way of life as much as we can) and the research that supports it is very convincing. Another thing that I found engaging was the tweaks Kresser provides for the diet for certain afflictions or goals, such as weight loss, autoimmune disease, etc. This is not a book that says "this is what you should eat" but rather a guide to self-improvement that is at times very aware at how radical a change it might all be for some people, and openly refrains from judging you for thinking so, instead offering some simple guidelines to improve your health. At the very end there is a section that for me could have come sooner, which is a chapter on eating Paleo on a budget, which provides some very useful tips. These kinds of foods tend to be more expensive, and all the cheap stuff, such as pasta and rice, are thrown out. This section takes budget into account and has a big influence on how I participate in Paleo. That begin said, the lifestyle aspects didn't catch my attention as much as nutrition. Certain things I felt were just taking it a bit too far, such as wearing orange-tinted glasses after sundown to filter out tiring blue light. I'm sure it's benificial, but thing like these I'm just not going to try. Another thing that hugely irritates me is the fact that the Seven Day Meal Plan has ridiculously random serving number. Some lunches are for two, some dinners for four and one breakfast even serves eight! This might be interesting for when cooking in bulk, but I can do multiplications myself. However, adding 1/2 a red onion to an eight-person recipe makes it hard to adjust it to just a single person. Certain aspects of the cooking are also either too involved or contain ingredients I can't afford on a regular basis, so it's a pick-and-choose of recipes, but they're very interesting and the general guidelines the book provides gives more than enough information to create your own Paleo-friendly meals. All in all, this book has made me very excited about the Paleo diet, and though the change is taking some effort, I do feel it is sustainable and good for my health. The 80/20 rule desribed in the book also helps, which means that about 20% of the time, you can be more lenient with the diet, which greatly helps eating as a social event, because most people won't be eating paleo.Great read, can't wait to get it all going. less
