Something Wickedly Weird

review 1: I read this as The Werewolf and the Ibis - which is a better title.An enjoyable opening to the Something Wickedly Weird series of children's books by author/illustrator Chris Mould who we went to see at a local library event recently. A good cast of characters (many of them distinctly creepy) - a pack's worth of three legged dogs, a talking pike, a pirate who wears the bones of his left arm and hand pinned to his jacket. I thought the theme of unintended consequences was a very fine one for a children's book and well handled. Stanley Buggles, the boy who has inherited Candlestick Hall, makes an appealing hero and I found myself eager to find out what happens when he has another holiday in Crampton Rock.Lovely illustrations, especially the crustacean (family opinions differ... more on whether it is a crab or a lobster) turning some of the pages.
review 2: Der Name der Buchreihe Something Wickedly Weird ist eine Anspielung auf ein Zitat aus Shakespears Macbeth (something wicked this way comes). Der elfjährige Stanley Buggles erbt von einem unbekannten Großonkel, Admiral Bartholomew Swift, Candlestick Hall, weil immer der jüngste Sproß erbberechtigt ist. Allein macht er sich auf den Weg in das mehr als seltsame Crampton Rock. Ein Holzsteg, die titelgebende Wooden Mile, die aber im Buch sonst weiter keine Rolle spielt, führt vom Bahnhof aus zur Stadt und steht während der Flut unter Wasser. Unheimlich ist es hier, die Hunde haben alle nur drei Beine und nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit wagt sich niemand mehr ins Freie. Ein Werwolf verbreitet Angst und Schrecken in Crampton Rock, außerdem ist sie ein Treffpunkt für Piraten.So wie das Buch aussieht, hatte ich etwas ähnliches wie die Eddie Dickens Trilogie von Philip Ardagh erwartet, doch es ist nicht so lustig. Ein paar skurrile Charaktere tauchen auf, im Vergleich zu Ardagh kommt alles ein wenig brav daher. Für Kinder ist das ein bißchen gruselig. Die Illustrationen vom Autor Chris Mould sind klasse und wirklich witzig. Die Geschichte ist auch liebenswert erzählt, doch zündet nicht. Und am Ende fragte ich mich: Das war's? less
