Adrian's Undead Diary
review 1: Ever read a book that's been sitting in your Kindle (or on your shelf, if you're still reading them that way) and kick yourself for not picking it up earlier. That's exactly what I did when I got a few pages into this one. At first, I didn't really like Adrian, but the story sucked me in and the character grew on me. Eventually, I realized that Adrian was one of the most real characters I'd ever come across. He's flawed (aren't we all), makes mistakes, and regrets them. He speaks the way you'd expect a thirty-something year old guy to speak and has realistic skills for someone with his background. The entire story had a great flow with plenty of tension and excitement. The best aspect of this book was the way Adrian's writing style changes slightly as he becomes more alone... more. By the time it ends, you can really see the effect that being so isolated is having on him. As someone that drove a truck over the road for a little while, I can tell you from experience that being alone with your thoughts for too long can have very strange results on the old noodle, and Philbrook does a fantastic job of portraying that.Don't put this one off like I did. It's a great book and you should read it now!
review 2: Adrian Ring (when I first read his full name I just thought Adrian’s ‘ring’ W.T.H (does that make me a bad person)hehe. So, Adrian Ring (laughs to myself again), finds himself woken up by gunshots outside (the first indication something is wrong). As the apocalypse becomes more apparent, Adrian gathers supplies and his cat Otis Although Adrian saves Otis he is too late to save his mother, and didn’t try to find his girlfriend. Adrian heads out to Auburn Lake Academy where he works, this will be his safe heaven (or so he thinks). After dealing with the complications at the academy he wrestles with his conscience. Pent up grief and guilt eats at his sanity so he decides to starts a dairy, who he calls Mr. Journal. We follow Adrian on his day to day life in the apocalypse; he is my type of guy. If the world ended I would hope to find someone like him to rough it out with. There were a couple of chapters in the book that were not from Adrian’s point of view (which felt weird for a dairy/journal). These chapters are the stories of what happened to a couple of different people after Adrian had interacted with them. Even thoughthey felt out of place I enjoyed them. There are quite a few typos, wrong words, misspelled words and felt repetitive at times. But I can forgive all that because the book is entertaining, and funny. less
