Hello everyone, congratulations for seeing the end of the year. Just before we round up the year, I would like to write about something that’s been on my mind for a while now. It’s the issue of Family history.
What do I mean by Family History? According to the Merriam-webster online dictionary, Family History is defined as past occurrences (of a medical or mental health condition) in family members or past incidences (of a type of behaviour) by family members or a record of one’s ancestors.
In this article, my definition or reference to family history would be a little different from the definition above.
I don’t know whether it will be safe to generalize, but I have realized that most families have a history or a pattern of behaviour; whether good or bad. For every one of us on this side of life (Africa), there is a pattern of character or traits in our bloodline. These could be good or evil traits.
Several family traits could be inherited and passed down to succeeding generations.
In the bible, is a perfect example of evil family history. Abraham’s family had a history of lying.
- Abraham lied about Sarah being his sister, Genesis 20:2 (NKJV), Now Abraham said of Sarah his wife, “She is my sister.” And Abimelech king of Gerar sent and took Sarah.
Funny enough in Genesis 26:6-7 (NKJV) Isaac did the exact same thing.
- So Isaac dwelt in Gerar. And the men of the place asked about his wife. And he said, “She is my sister”; for he was afraid to say, “She is my wife,” because he thought, “lest the men of the place kill me for Rebekah, because she is beautiful to behold.”
- Isaac son, Jacob lied to him in order to get Esau’s blessing. Genesis 27:19 (NKJV), Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done just as you told me; please arise, sit and eat of my game, that your soul may bless me.”
- Laban, Jacob’s uncle deceived Jacob and made him marry Leah instead of Racheal. Genesis 29:25 (NKJV), So it came to pass in the morning, that behold, it was Leah. And he said to Laban, “What is this you have done to me? Was it not for Rachel that I served you? Why then have you deceived me?”
We also see a history of barrenness in that family.
- Abraham was 100 years old when Isaac his son was born.
- When Isaac got married, his wife Rebekah was also barren. Genesis 25:21 (NKJV), Now Isaac pleaded with the Lord for his wife, because she was barren; and the Lord granted his plea, and Rebekah his wife conceived.
- Isaac son, Jacob’s wife Rachel whom he loved was also barren.
In my research for this article, I came across articles which say persons who have evil traits in their bloodline cannot do anything about it except to pray. It is important to pray; yes but being responsible is also playing your own part. You can’t expect God to do everything and then you just fold your arms.
What do I mean by this? Please follow me closely.
First, of, let’s start with the basics. As a serious and a diligent Christian you must do a detailed research on your background/foundation. You can’t afford to be careless. Almost always you will find out that, there is a particular pattern (or patterns) of event or happenings in your bloodline which in most cases, especially for many African are the results of an evil background.
In some families, is a history of Divorce, separation, delay in marriage, marital unfulfillment, cheating, and the likes.
If you discover there’s a pattern of marital failure in your family, then you must be extra careful, watchful and prayerful when you want to get married.
The truth is if you are not careful, you will not pay attention to the things you are supposed to. The truth is if history is working against a person, situations, circumstances even decisions the person makes will all allow negative history to be repeated.
So it means that asides praying, you will have to be very careful and sensitive so you don’t make decisions that will allow evil history to be repeated in your life. There’s a prayer I’ve started praying for myself, that any action or step I will take that will let evil history be repeated in my life, let me not take it.
A friend of mine who was going through a trying period in his marriage told me “Joke I don’t want to be divorced, my father was divorced, my grandfather was divorced, I don’t want what happened to them to happen to me”. Unfortunately, when he wanted to get married, he married a woman who didn’t love him. Against the advice of trusted friends he married her, now the lady wants to leave.
What I got from that story is this, because history was already against him, he should have been more vigilant and careful when he wanted to marry. He willfully married a woman who didn’t love him, he felt that with time her love would grow. He told me, he knew she didn’t love him, but he felt his love for her would overcome whatever lackadaisical attitude she had. She showed him several times she didn’t love him, she even almost called off the wedding, in fact on the wedding day, she cried like it was her saddest day in life, yet my friend married her. Unfortunately, the history of divorce may again happen in his life.
Earlier in this article as an example of evil history, I made mention of Rachel Jacob’s wife who was barren. But do you know why? Because the Lord shut her womb. Her womb was shut because Jacob her husband did not love Leah, the wife he was deceived to marry. Jacob took a wrong step by hating Leah, and it resulted in allowing history be repeated in his life.
There are different types of evil family history, in some families it could be the wife being the breadwinner, it could be divorce or separation, it could be drunkenness, it could be poverty, it could be near success syndrome, it could be delay, it could be getting pregnant outside wedlock, it could be womanizing. Whatever it is, it should not be treated lightly. Observe the pattern in your family, your extended family and don’t joke about it.
If the pattern in your family is womanizing or getting pregnant outside wedlock, then you know you shouldn’t be careless with the opposite sex, because any mistake you make would enable history to be repeated.
If it is drunkenness, you know you shouldn’t be friends with drunkards, you know you shouldn’t marry someone who drinks, you know you shouldn’t even smell alcohol or even live near a bar.
Have you guys noticed that, when a lady gives birth to a girl outside wedlock, the child she gives birth to (most likely a girl) will also get pregnant outside wedlock and gives birth to a girl and the cycle continues until someone breaks it.
How do you break evil patterns?
First of all, you must be born again. You must not live in sin. You can’t come from a family of evil patterns and be living in sin, the devil will use you for Jollof Rice. Ecclesiastes 10:8b NKJV says, And whoever breaks through a wall will be bitten by a serpent. If you give room to the enemy in your life, you are on your own.
In as much as you should be careful of the decisions and the steps you take, you must also pray because the Race is not to the swift but to the one the Lord shows mercy. Pray specific prayers targeting breaking evil patterns in your family. You can pray Evil History will not be repeated in my life.
I pray for you today, that your life will not make negative history. I pray for you today, that the expectations of evil concerning you will be disappointed, that negative patterns in your family will be broken.
I pray for you today that 2018 will be a year of testimonies, that things you’ve not been able to achieve before, you will achieve them.
Thank you for reading. I await your testimonies. Do not forget to share your thoughts on this topic in the comment section.
