Tales of Terror
review 1: Thirteen-year-old Ethan Matthews and his younger sister Cathy live at The Old Inn that the siblings love growing up in. The inn is an isolated and otherwise deserted cliff top home that's practically an island surrounded by the sea. In the past, the seafaring men who came to the inn, spellbound Ethan and Cathy with their tales of adventures and travels. On the third night of a wild storm, they're struck down by a terrible illness and their father (their mother passed away years prior) goes to fetch a doctor. His instructions are for them to stay in the house and on no account leave or let anyone enter. Eventually their symptoms of the illness pass and they patiently wait for their father's return.During his absence, a stranger appears on a stormy night to seek shelter. The ... morechildren invite him in and he appears to be seventeen or eighteen. To pass the time until the storm passes, the stranger, Jonah Thackeray, tells the siblings 9 gruesome and bloodthirsty tales that he's heard on his travels as a sailor. All of the stories Jonah tells have taken place on ships and are violent, grim and grotesque in nature. When the storm finally passes, their storyteller leaves them and the children come to a chilling realization about their storyteller and learn about "the incident".This horror tale is not for the faint. The 10 short, creepy and gruesome stories will hold readers' attention while the chilling black-and-white illustrations only enhance the mood. Due to the content, language (curse words are sprinkled throughout) and descriptiveness, I would only recommended this to mature middle school grade readers who really enjoy horror stories. Original and grim.
