review 1: I loved the first half. Great ideas. Interesting SF concepts. Love the adventure. Love getting to pilot awesome fighter ships along with the characters. Love innate telepathy paired with technology. The villains become increasingly more interesting as the book progresses, too. However, the romance develops way too fast to be believable, especially with all the narrator build-up. Actually, the narrator tells us things about the characters that the characters themselves don't do quite often. As an example, one of the main races is supposed to be cool, calm, collected. Not Vulcan-extreme but at least meditative. And yet all the characters from this race, when not acting in summary, have explosive anger issues, snarl, become outraged, act the complete opposite of what the... more narrator informs us they're supposed to be, ignoring all the tools they've developed to maintain rational thought. I mean, I know people who can be angry and quite calm at the same time, so each time this happened it felt inconsistent or contradictory. It just reminds me of books where the author calls his character clever and wise but then the character, when in control of himself and not in summary, acts consistently beyond foolish. The first half was fun enough that I might finish it, but we'll see.
review 2: I really loved this book it is very inspirational regarding the other humanoids in the space...their outlook. I loved the characters and the style of writing. it seems there osjecas a book written before this one...I'll try to grab it and read it but I think they are not story bounded so you can read either (except for the main character Nova)...it's a mix of sci-fi and a little dose of romance between to different species...loved it....recommend it :-) less
