The Fire-ing Squad

Ash is still on his way to Goldenrod city when he hears about the Fire and Rescue Grand Prix. There he sees Aiden from The Pokemon Water War who is entering with his Wartortle team. The Squirtle Squad has also returned to enter the competition, but only do good when Ash’s Squirtle is there to help them. After a Team Rocket attack Squirtle finishes the competition with his old team. Squirtle decides his team needs him, and says goodbye with Ash promising they’ll always be friends.

This episode is just full of throwbacks. It always amazes me when one off characters come back. We got the Squirtle Squad and the Wartortle Team along with their respective trainers. The writers also made it make sense that both groups would be here and meeting without it feeling contrived. Having a large scale contest with these fire fighting groups is the perfect opportunity to have this story. They show it off well too, the contest evens are animated well and full of action.

The point of bring these groups together should be obvious immediately, as soon as I saw the Squirtle Squad I knew it meant our Squirtle would be saying goodbye. It’s been a good pokemon all these episodes and it’s at least leaving to help a common good. It’s sad that Ash is losing all his starters though, first Charizard now Squirtle. It has to happen, I know the creators just want Ash’s team to grow and show off new pokemon suitable to the region. I wish I knew what they were planning with Ash’s team now that he only has four pokemon for some reason.

Why does Professor Oak need to keep Heracross, and I don’t mean an in story reason. Ash hasn’t had it very long and even though he has used it quite a bit there’s no reason to send it off to Oak just yet. The fact that Ash does use it moderately means it should stay in Ash’s team. It’s frustrating to see an interesting and useful pokemon of Ash’s just to be sent away probably only to be used sparingly.
