review 1: Ocean’s Child is a soothing flow of rhythmic language for students in grades PS-K. Set in the Artic Ocean at dusk, a mother and baby paddle home along the seacoast observing and saying good night to the different ocean creatures. Each spread of the book features a new animal- otter, walruses, dolphins, polar bear, whale, puffin, sea lion, orca, albatross and seal. The animals are depicted settling down to sleep while the mother and baby duo is at the top of the page looking on from their boat as they say the same “good night” refrain to each passing animal they see.The artwork in the book is a soothing tone of neutrals with a splash of vibrant colors outlining the animals. The illustrator created the image of the water out of swirly patterns which helps emphasize ... morea reflection off the water onto the animals and boat. This book has an unrhymed text with but a repetitive refrain that would be more appropriate to read as a bedtime story to child since it focuses on the ocean animals going to sleep. Children can easily pick up the repetitive refrain allowing young readers to read along with their parents.
review 2: A really nice choice for a bedtime book. The art is gorgeous and dreamy. The repetition of "To ocean's child we say goodnight. Good night, little __, good night" gives young ones an easy opportunity to chime in on every spread, and the choices of Alaskan animals is cool. On some pages, the lines don't scan exactly to fit the rhythm established in the beginning, but I like that it has a flow without forcing rhymes. Nice. less
