review 1: Sweet heroine in a short, dark Beauty & the Beast retelling. The writing and atmosphere were enjoyable, and I always love a BatB story. But, I wasn't as moved by the romance. The heroine's arc and feelings are developed, but the hero felt a little like a blank slate. I understand her love for him, but his love isn't really shown. Why does he care for her, beyond the fact that she's the Beauty to his curse?
review 2: Worthy retelling of Beauty and the BeastThis is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast by an author practised in the art of retelling the fairy stories we all grew up with. When I thought of rereading Beauty and the Beast, my main questions were as follows. Why was Beauty compelled to be the Beast’s bride? What curse created the Beast? What would B
... moreeauty have to do to break the curse?Christine Pope answered these questions effortlessly, so much so that I didn’t ever feel the need to go back to the original fairy story to find out how the original story unfolded. It is a feat to make a page-turning full-length novel out of a fairy story of less than ten pages length. How did the author do in this? In my opinion, okay. The first 50 pages or so were a little slow for my liking. I would have liked the set-up to be completed sooner. I would have liked less of the ongoing descriptions of the relationship between Rhianne and her sister, and the reproof of the townsfolk for Rhianne’s painting skill. What I did like was that Beauty, aka Rhianne, had a special talent, and how that special aptitude would help her in the long run. I also liked that she had a magical skill that also helped her win out in the end. I liked that she was not perfect, and her flawed personality was all the more likeable.I liked the slow burn of the relationship with the Beast, and the reason she fell in love with him. The Beast’s personality should have shone through more to develop the relationship. The ending was satisfying though. The elements came together in the end. There was not the romance one would anticipate in this type of story. less
