review 1: A touching, poignant story set during the rise of Nazi Germany and World War Two it tells the story of a Jewish woman, the catholic man she'll marry, their respective families and their struggle to survive. The Luck of the Weissensteiners is beautifully told, evoking vivid imagery and setting the scenes magically, transporting us to Bratislava, in what is now Slovakia. This is so well researched and handled that it reminds me of novels such as The Pianist. Highly recommended.
review 2: A solid, realistic view of World War 2 from the eyes of a Jewish family, who through a series "coincidences," narrowly avoids death in a concentration camp. The distant, omniscient point of view in the book is necessary so that the reader can follow the wide cast of characters. C
... moreonsidering the sheer number of people, and my poor memory, I was surprised at how easily I kept them all apart. It's a credit to the author for giving each one of them such distinct personalities and voices. As some of the characters deal with jealousy, conscience, madness, betrayal, and loyalty, they each make realistic, believable decisions that give the story the feel of being a true story, rather than fiction. less

Long, engaging characters, confusing geography, almost too much to cover.
