Bryant & May
review 1: Set mostly in the London Underground, detectives Arthur Bryant and John May are working under pressure. The last murderer they captured has killed a young policeman and escaped. They have only one week to retake him or the unit will be shut down. Their only clue is that he seems to have some unbreakable tie to King’s Cross Station. In their pursuit they keep stumbling over bodies in the Underground. The setting is well researched and intriguing (especially after recently reading Neil Gaiman’s “Neverwhere”). The use of social media as a plot device is amusing. The character, however, did not capture my imagination and I am still undecided whether I am interested enough to read any others of the series.
review 2: I received this book as a Goodreads
... more giveaway. My first impression of Bryant and May was extremely positive. The mystery begins right from the start of the book and is genuinely intriguing while the use of language is often amusing and sometimes almost poetic. The cast of characters is handled well. Arthur Bryant is an amusing central character who is written with consistency. May on the other hand seemed to be slightly underplayed for an eponymous character, although this didn't really detract from my enjoyment of the book. However Fowler does a fantastic job with quite an extensive range of supporting characters. The plot development is well paced as Bryant and his colleagues in the Peculiar Crimes Unit struggle to save their careers by recapturing the elusive Mr Fox and solve a series of murders on the London Underground. Sadly though the climax of the story seemed rather rushed and it was only in the last few pages that I decided this was a 3 star book rather than the 4 stars I had been expecting to give it. Despite this slight disappointment I will certainly look out for Fowler's other books. less
