review 1: I have read 9 of this series and have enjoyed all of them. They are about a peculiar crimes unit led by 2 elderly men who are helped by an assortment of characters. it's like returning to see old friends and it doesn't matter if you read the books out of order. The crimes in the main plot seem to be connected to Punch and Judy and we get given information about this thrown in. The stories are funny and quirky and there are plenty of distractions so you think you know who did it but can't be sure until the last moment.
review 2: Much as I have liked the Bryant and May series, I feel their time is coming to a close. In many ways, this is one of the weaker books, the plot still complex, but the motives clearer and the actions more comprehensible. The Home Office i
... mores closing in on the Peculiar Crimes Unit, too, and Government becomes embroiled, or at least one of its Ministers does. The book opens with a classic "locked room" murder, but this one is unusual. It was the murder of a baby, and appears to have been committed by the father's marionette Mr. Punch, in a classic Punch and Judy manner. When the second murder happens, you begin to get the feeling that there's going to be a whole series of murders based on Punch and Judy, and start wondering when the crocodile and the sausages are going to arrive. (Actually that might have been fun.) But in fact there is a theatrical context to everything, the murdered baby's father being the producer of a new West End play by a debutant young playwright. All of London is the stage, and all the players (crew and staff) are merely suspects. With time drawing in on the Peculiar Crimes Unit, it's up to ageing eccentric Arthur Bryant and his partner, the loser-in-love John May, to save the day, the play and the Unit by luring the murderer out from the crowd. Can they do it? Is Bob a Builder? (June 2012) less
