review 1: I was a goodreads first reads winner of the book" the Secret Wisdom of the Earth" I enjoyed this book for the most part. it is seen through the eyes of 14 year old Kevin. in the mid 1980s. Kevin witnesses the horrific and accidental death of his three year old brother Joshua.it is a devastating time for the family. Kevin and his mother go to Medgar Kentucky to spend the summer with his grandfather. the town is in the Appalachia area of mountains. it is a coal mining area. Kevin meets a kid named Buzzy and they become friends. there is a lot going on in this small town. it is a mining town and the town is divided because of the hills and mountains being blown up for commercial purposes and jobs. many including Kevin's family do not want to see the mountains that have been... more here four thousands of years to be destoyed. this causes a lot rifts in the town. his grandfather is the town veterinarian and friends with many of the residents. a lot goes on during this summer that Kevin is a witness too. a murder, and when Kevin his grandfahter and friend Buzzy go on a camping trip they are faced with some real danger. do not want to give away too many details. A good story. I liked it was through a young person's eyes.this was a good "coming of age story" reminded me of "stand by me" I wished the camping part of the story was not so long. but for the most part this is a good story. I could really feel what the town was like with the writing of Christopher Scottin.
review 2: A suspenseful story and outstanding writing are just the beginning of what is wonderful about this debut coming – of - age novel. Poignant and deeply moving with a strong emphasis on place and wonderfully developed characters, it tells a story of violence in a small Kentucky mining town and of the fallout that changes a young man’s heart and life. Everyone should have a grandfather as wise and kind as Pops. less

Made it to page 200 or so. Abominable. I don't give up on many books, but this is one of them.
