review 1: I found this to be eye-opening. I know everything is being automated today but I did not know just how deep it goes. This book gave me amazing learnings about the algorithms of finance, music, medicine, customer service and even journalism. A few examples:The chapters on the financial markets showed me the creepier side of the algorithms used by quants on Wall Street. I appreciated this as a balance to the positive spin I got from The Physics of Wall Street. In music, the industry is not just being influenced by algorithms, it is actually fed by bots and I see why most music is just more of the same today. There is a lovely story, however, about how it was a mathematician who found out how the Beatles created the famous opening chord of A Hard Days Night.Customer service wa... mores a revelation. Lately I've used online chat to resolve problems with customer service for 3 different companies. I was so pleased with the outcome in each case that I honestly believed they had real people, well trained and well chosen people, taking care of me. They were just so fast and efficient, nothing like the clunky, frustrating chats I'd known before. Surprise! The bots are just that good now. I listened to the audiobook and found the narration a bit sing-song-y for my taste but it was not bad enough to detract from the quality of the book. The pace is perfect.
review 2: This is one of the best general science books I've read on algorithms, artificial intelligence, and computer science. Initially I thought this was a book about algorithmic trading algorithms, but it covers a number of other areas and applications of artificial intelligence as well. The book covers the absolute state of the art in AI and areas of currently active research. Additionally, all of this is explained clearly and simply without complex technical explanations. less

Some interesting articles but nothing special. At points it feels like filler.
