review 1: A very enlightening story describing in detail the 1906 earthquake that took place in San Francisco and the efforts required to rebuild the city. In addition, learning about Julia Morgan, who was the first licensed architect in California, hired to rebuild the Fairmount hotel (and after designed the Hearst Castle), which was a very impressive accomplishment for a woman in that time. The fictional portion of the story was enjoyable too, although as a previous reviewer mentioned, even though it started off as a competition, it did not carry out through the remainder of the story.
review 2: I liked this book. I would give it a C+ (I am a hard critic). I gave it that grade due to the fact that the story was supposedly set about 1906 after the big fire in San Franc
... moreiso, but I never felt that reading it.There were far too many conveniences that I cannot image having in that era. Example, a new constructed hotel has it all. Elevators, private phones in each room etc, etc. It never fit with the era it was set in. less

An enjoyable read. I would have liked more history and a little less of the predictable love story.

bleh! I couldn't finish it. The plot, characters, and writing were all very boring and dull.
