review 1: I loved the 19th century story. The 20th century one? It was a joke. Typical characters who are pretty one-dimensional (not to mention, as a professor, I can vouch for the fact she got that tenure thing all wrong, but hey). Corlis has no reason whatsoever to have such a chip on her shoulder, first of all, and who at age 34 talks like that? Since I'm the same age, I think I can vouch that I don't hear my friends saying things like Corlis does. I grant this was written in 1999...but still. I also went to LSU and non of my NOLA friends talked like they do. At all. Easy read, pretty hokey for the 20th century (since it was in 1999...) but the 19th c. story was good enough to make me read it.
review 2: A fairly long book, but a quick read. Interesting storylin
... moree - I learned a lot about the New Orleans culture. I'm also a sucker for books that jump back and forth between the past and the present - in this case, the main character was having flashbacks to her ancestor's time in New Orleans. While the main character (Corlis) could be a bit dense and stubborn at times, overall she was relatable and sympathetic. As a lover of historic buildings, I found it very easy to get invested in the characters' struggle to save the Selwyn buildings. I have read 4 of Ciji Ware's books at this point and I have yet to be disappointed! less

Overlong and the psychic time traveling back to the 1800s just didn't ring true for me.
