review 1: I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I liked the world that the author built with its divided people and the building tension between the them. I was also pleasantly surprised by the main characters. Han and Raisa are both very unconventional fantasy heros as they are far from perfect. Han is an outlaw and Raisa is a princess that likes her romances a bit too much. The only disappointment was Amon who is just too righteous and one dimensional. The plot seemed to develop a little slowly in this first book but this second one was definitely more dynamic.
review 2: This book, like the first of its series, is an excellent story, with unexpected turns, expected turns, an intriguing plot, and some romance.Like the book before it, the story of "The Exiled Queen" ha
... mores a very slow start. It picks up right where we left off, if not a week or two after the conclusion of "The Demon King", with Han and Dancer in the mountains travelling to Odens Ford (a sort of universal school for anything and everything) through Arden, and Raisa and Amon travelling to the same destination, only through Tamron, to the West. The first ten chapters or so are all filler, completely unrelated to the overall story and having little-to-no effect on the plot later on.Once they get to Odens Ford, however, the actual story gets going. I found it strange however, that on the first day of class, of the first year of school, they attempt an extremely dangerous spell in which they travel to an alternate dimension to try to communicate, and for some reason get mad at Han when he stays in the portal too long and nearly dies. however, the real reason that this happened is to be able to introduce Crow, a mysterious aristocrat who offers to teach Han lessons in magic that the school won't teach him. This alternate dimension, named Aediion, is used frequently throughout the rest of the book, however, as a convenient way to communicate with Crow. The chapters that are told from Hans perspective are always exciting, mysterious, full of action, etc. Basically, the opposite of boring. However, unfortunately, the chapters in which Raisa narrates stand in a stark contrast to that. Maybe it was that Han was more relatable to me, but Raisas chapters were just plain... boring. Unless the chapter had Han in it. Really, just any chapter that had him in it was much better than those that didn't. less
