review 1: The Demon King was a thrill from beginning to end. It built up a kingdom within my mind, and even included political and geographical details, and showed the toll that war takes upon not only the people, but also the trade. It introduced Han Alister, a snarky young man who survives by his wits and reputation as a street lord named Cuffs Alister, because he wears silver cuffs on his wrists, which he later learns are magical. I enjoyed his down to earth reason and his knowledge of his capabilities. When Raisa ana'Marianna was thrust into the story, I admit I did not like her as much as Han. She has a good head upon her shoulders but frankly no common sense. She believes that she is capable of more than she can handle, which is a trait that is both endearing but dangerous. As... more the story progressed, I came to like her more. She is the princess heir to the queendom of the Fells, while Han is a resident of a poor town called Ragmarket. These two characters clash when the High Wizard plans to take over the Fells. Han learns that he is a descendant of the Demon King, Algor Waterlow, and Princess Hanelea, the original queen of the Fells, the first of Raisa's line. The two flee seperately to Oden's Ford, Raisa concealing her identity as the escaped princess, even from Han. Han must learn to control wizardry and fight against the high wizard for the Clans, the people of the mountain who have a strong distrust of wizards and keep their power in reign. It was a truly fantastic book that I would recommend to both family and friends.
review 2: This is a standard young adult fantasy novel. The themes are all familiar and mostly predictable. The 'plot twists' won't surprise anybody who's well read in the fantasy genre. The characters are mind-numbingly stupid to advance the plot, and 80% of the conflict could be resolved if people would just talk to each other rather than needlessly keeping secrets. That said, its mostly well written. Once it gets going, the pacing is good. If you enjoy the familiar fantasy memes, as I do, then this is entertaining. I'm going to read the next book in the series. This wouldn't be high on my list of books to recommend, but I wouldn't avoid reading it either. less

After reading 30 pages of The Demon King by Cinda Williams Chima, I chose to not read this book for my second book report. I chose to not read it for my book report because it didn't give you something to make you think about your life. Another reason I chose to not read this book was because it was only for enjoyment. Lastly I thought of all the people who normally read fantasy books and wondered if they would enjoy me talking about this book. Because of these reasons, I rated the book 3 stars. However, this could change after I read the book in it's entirety.

This series made me fall back in love with fantasy novels. Going into the book, I wasn't sure how I'd like it, but Han's narration really pulled me in and didn't let me go. Both Raisa and Han offer a lot of contrast, which is I think makes them such good narrators. All of the characters are so dynamic and have so much potential for development. It's impossible not to like them in at least one aspect. Definitely my favorite series of all time.
