review 1: KING OF SWORD AND SKY, third in C.L. Wilson's Tairan Soul series, following LORD OF THE FADING LANDS and LADY OF LIGHT AND SHADOWS, continues the chronicles of Ellysetta Baristani and her soul mate and husband Rainer vel'En Daris' quest to save his Kingdom and help his true mate save her soul.In KING OF SWORD AND SKY, Ellysetta travels with Rainer through to the Fading Lands, but is met with anywhere from lukewarm hospitality to downright hostility by the people. She is unfortunately marked by a great evil, Vadim, and many would already have her selling them out to him for her own personal gain.Ellysetta and Rainer have a steep hole to climb out of; despite his claim that she is his soul mate, many counter that she is using dark arts to bespell him into thinking that. For ... morethe Fey she is guilty, and the idea she could be innocent is beyond consideration—she is tainted with Dark Magicks, ergo she is just as bad as Vadim. You can't go into KING OF SWORD AND SKY without having fully read the first two books in the series. Plenty is explained, but much of the character development of secondary characters were explored in the earlier books, and tensions are carried over from each book as well. The plot is also just as complex, layered with threads that make sense later in the story and mysteries that are flirted with, but left unanswered.I highly recommend this book, but do yourself a favor and read her other books as well first. With the fourth book (QUEEN OF SONG AND SOULS) not being released until next year in June (2009), you have plenty of time to catch up, investigate and be thrilled.
review 2: 3.75The Good: Wow, shit just got real. This book brought out the emotional roller-coaster minus the cotton candy. The pace really picked up compared to the first two. I wish I could say it was a slow burn to get to this point, but the important thing is that I'm now invested and want to see where we go from here.I need to see how Ms. Wilson ties this up in the next two books. Especially when it comes to the people trapped in Eld. I eager to see Elysetta triumph over her beginning, i want to see Rain become a more fleshed out character that is worthy of the name of hero. (Sadly, that ship has sailed for me - though Rain really made a solid go of it this book - my heart had already hardened). The Bad:Something is revealed about Elysetta's adopted family that I thought was lame and a cop out. I don't know how far apart these books were published (I bought on kindle and the publishing date indicates they were all released together without the typical gap you would see, but that could just be a kindle thing) it would have been good to have had some small hints that this was a possibility. Of course, this could have happened, but maybe I skimmed those parts (I found the first two books painfully long). The thousand year thing is still lame. I know that this was likely done to make the story appear more epic, etc, but I found it failed for me, Except to make me tired of it and look down on those that could do nothing but: be insane, stagnate and/or limply accept their fate. For. One. Thousand. Years. So much happens in one year of my life that a thousand years is unfathomable to me to have characters: immortal, magical, supposedly intelligent characters, mired in the same rut that started one thousand years ago. I read on the author's website that this series of books was originally one super long book of over 1000 pages. And these pages eventually became her first published books. It makes complete sense to me now why I've found the main plot to be so painfully slow moving through the first two books. We've barely covered the first act. I really see the promise in this author. Every book so far has been better and stronger than the one before. I've very curious to see how she handles a normal novel length book now that she has much more experience under her belt. less
