review 1: This is a gem of a book. I wasn't sure at first, as it was a little slow to get started and the writing style took a little getting used to, but very soon you begin to fall in love with little five-year-old Pea. Claire King skilfully paints a picture of France during a sweltering summer and Pea's adventures as she is left to her own devices. Her heavily mother is grieving and has taken to her bed. Pea makes friends with Claude, a neighbour who has his own secret reason for seeking out Pea's company. Touching and heartfelt with a superb twist at the end.
