review 1: This is a gem of a book. I wasn't sure at first, as it was a little slow to get started and the writing style took a little getting used to, but very soon you begin to fall in love with little five-year-old Pea. Claire King skilfully paints a picture of France during a sweltering summer and Pea's adventures as she is left to her own devices. Her heavily mother is grieving and has taken to her bed. Pea makes friends with Claude, a neighbour who has his own secret reason for seeking out Pea's company. Touching and heartfelt with a superb twist at the end.
review 2: "Pea" is five and a half; her sister, Margot, is four. Their mother is very pregnant, and their father was recently killed in an accident. This is the story, told by Pea, of small children trying to ... moredeal with the loss of one parent, the depression of the other and a surprising, but vital, friendship with a neighbor. If I could give this book more than 5 stars, I would! Heartwarming, heartbreaking, filled with memories of childhood... I enjoyed this so much, that I think I'll let it sink in for a bit and then go back and read it again. less
