review 1: The word "sacrasm" comes from the Greek word, sarkasmos, meaning "to tear flesh, bite the lip in rage, sneer". We might think that sarcasm is witty or a clever way to put someone in their place, but the truly sarcastic person is biting and tearing in rage. Sarcasm is really a passive-aggressive mode of conflict avoidance. So as I read this story of young Rickie, I felt for her. "Hurting people hurt people" played in my thoughts. Rickie is really a damaged person who needs help. No where in the first half of the book did I sense she was a self-sacrificing, loving mother. I read a lot of resentment toward the son who couldn't be what she needed him to be. No way do I consider Rickie a hero. But I really did want to see her pull out of her low-spirited survival. A litt... morele disappointed that it was a man that pulled her out--except that Andrew really was a principled character and I like to think that five years after the last chapter, they're still together, still in love, but matured in selfless giving to one another and their family.Having read synopses of Ms LaZebnik's other books, I will add them to my "to read" lists.
review 2: I loved this book. Rickie is soooo funny and very sarastic so I can relate to her. She does seems like any 20 something year old that was lost BUT also has a child. But she starts to grow up and meets someone that likes her for who she is and she doesn't have to change herself and the entire time he was right under her nose. I loved this book and would recommend it to anyone that would love a great story about being young, lost, and w/ a child that and needing to grow up!!! less

Rickie annoyed the crap out of me at first, but I liked how she grew by the end.
