review 1: I really enjoyed this book which is really a collection of essays. I follow Claire Ridgeway's page on Facebook and there is always something interesting to read there. Clair's love of history is clear and she sees it through the eyes of reality and not romance. I admire all of the study that went into the creation of the collection. I would strongly recommend this collection to any serious history buff or fan of the Tudor time.
review 2: Some interesting nuggets that counteract received opinion but the book does give away its origins as a compilation of blog entries, since there is some repetition of material. (I suppose the question is whether as a writer your preference is to invest in some judicious editing or to just port over the blog entries wholesale. I'
... morem guessing the latter in this case, which smacks of laziness, but is probably helpful to the novice Tudor reader, where the duplication will help entrench the points made.) The colloquial, exclamatory style may grate if you are looking for a more dispassionate or professorial tone but all credit to the writer for her enthusiasm and who, it has to be said, is candid about her amateur credentials. I would look elsewhere if you're looking for a formal or chronological history as the format best suits the dip in, dip out reader. Enjoyable though slightly lightweight overall. less
