review 1: Fascinating biography, particularly regarding the light it shed for me on the Victorian theatre and the delicate social position of the actress. I imagine some people would rather our great artists lives were left alone unless our enjoyment of their work is compromised but I love Dickens's work and I see no conflict in retaining that alongside the realisation that he was a complex human being like the rest of us, who had no problem spouting one view in public whilst following its opposite in private.
review 2: More interesting than Dickens's affair with Nelly is how much effort was involved in keeping it hidden, and how shattering the evidence of her double-life was for her son. The author did a thorough job of stringing together the only evidence of the affair
... more that hasn't been destroyed, though so much is missing that the section on the affair itself seemed a bit speculative and lacked punch for me. However this book did provide insight into the lives and morals of the Victorians, and I found the chapters about Nelly's childhood and her life after Dickens especially compelling. less

spotted on update. OTOH I may just wait for the film, yet Tomlin is so very good. Decisions!

Interesting book, well researched , but heavy on conjecture about Nellie's emotional state.
