review 1: I never realised before but this is like a younger version of Sailor Moon - I knew both series use the 'magic girl' formula but there are actually a lot of similarities between the two series. The one thing I dislike about this series is the age of the characters for some of the story lines - a quick Google search shows me that Sakura and her classmates are meant to be around 10 during this volume, now for the most part that is fine - the crush that Sakura has on Yukito is very cute and really does remind me of the kind of blind eyed adoration some people experience at that age (same goes for Syaoran and Yukito for that matter), but the side story of one of Sakura's classmates and their teacher being engaged? Eww, no. I know that Sakura's parents met when she was 16 and he ... morewas her teacher and all which still, eww, but at least she was legal age! I can quite rightly see why that plot was cut from the US anime adaptation! That one minor niggle aside (it only really effects one story in this volume and I think it is touched upon briefly in one of the others so it is easily ignored) this is a really cute story, and some of the artwork is really gorgeous!
review 2: I've been meaning to tackle Cardcaptor Sakura in its manga form as I loved the animated series when I was younger. I have to say, the series is ten times more whimsical than I remember but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The art definitely matches the atmosphere, in the classic shojo CLAMP style. Usually I get irritated by CLAMP's art but I think the feeling of nostalgia greatly overwhelmed all of my other feelings about it. In fact, most of the rating is due to nostalgia. Man, it's almost exactly as I remembered it. Minus the homosexual hints, which I totally was expecting but it still startled me. less
