review 1: This followed the lives of Elisabeth Savaret, essentially a mail-order bride for the new French colony of Louisiana, and Auguste, a young Frenchman, as they try to adjust to their new lives and the Louisiana wilderness. I liked the first chapter where we are introduced to Elisabeth-she is nervous about her journey and her relationships with the other brides shows she has spunk. But then she got married and became oddly obsessive about her new husband she just met and seems to lose her personality in order to fit into what she thinks is his ideal woman. Even the forbidden romance between Elisabeth and Auguste just seemed to have no spark, nothing to make me care if they were able to be together or not.
review 2: Excellent writing and research beautifully evok
... moree early 18th century Louisiana and the dangerous conditions for 'mail-order' brides (and other settlers, explorers, etc.) These young women could not have anticipated how tough life would be, nor had I imagined the pestilential conditions; the protagonist is one such young woman, and in her the novelist has created a unique character who does not satisfy the historical romance recipe for female lead characters. She is pretty much on her own in a small wilderness pioneer ;community', as her husband comes home infrequently, and just long enough to get her pregnant yet again. Enough said. Well worth the reading time if you want a realistic evocation of French colonial life in Louisiana. In fact, I've kept this book to re-read. less

Set in 1704, French women sent to Louisiana to marry. Not easy to follow.
