review 1: Somewhat predictable (after all, it IS Romeo and Juliet, a Shakespearean tale everyone knows), this recreation of the classic tale travels along much as one might expect - Juliet, a vampire, falls in love with the son of a clan of vampire hunters. A good introduction to the familiar story for younger readers - appropriate for middle school age readers and easy enough for most 5th graders to handle, the story moves along nicely. Not the best recreation I've ever read, but definitely a well imagined and created story.
review 2: I saw this book while browsing the book section of Walmart and just had to have it. It combines two of my absolute favorite things. Romeo & Juliet and vampires. Romeo & Juliet has always been my favorite work by William Shakespeare so I
... morecouldn't wait to see how this adaptation panned out and I absolutely loved it.Juliet comes from a line of vicious vampires and is doomed to become one on her 16th birthday. Romeo comes from the line of vampire hunters that has been in battle with the Capulet's for years. Neither likes the way their family is. Juliet doesn't want to become a vampire, she'd rather die and Romeo doesn't want to fight or kill. He sees his family as being just as bloodthirsty as the vampires. Now there is a new Prince who demands a peace treaty between the races. It is illegal to drink human blood and it is also illegal to kill a vampire. Consequences of both actions is death. The story is basically the same as the original. Romeo is infatuated with Rosaline and insists on seeing her but instead finds Juliet and immediately falls for her. They immediately want to get married while Juliet's parents plan to marry her off to Count Paris, who in this version is a very prestigious vampire who has an in with the new prince. The Capulet's believe if he marries Juliet that will persuade him to talk to the Prince about renouncing the peace treaty. Doing so means the Capulet's will not loose their wealth, property & status in society. They are also slowly loosing their strength from the lack of human blood.I loved the part where Friar Laurence tells Juliet of the cure to vampirism. She immediately wants to do it so she can be human and with Romeo. That is what leads to her taking the potion to make her appear dead. It'll buy the Friar time to get the ingredients needed for the cure. But as in the original, Romeo doesn't get the message from the Friar and thinks Juliet is truly dead and wishes to join her. The sad part is she can hear everything but her body is completely immobile so she has no way to communicate with Romeo to let him know she's still alive. She doesn't regain function until it's too late. Romeo has taken the poison and appears dead already. My absolute favorite part is the twist Ms. Gabel put at the end. Somehow amidst her cries of sadness at Romeo's death, Juliet hears his heartbeat very shallow. She immediately decides to change him into a vampire in the hopes of being able to spend forever with him. She goes through the ritual to convert him but it doesn't appear to work, so Juliet starts chipping away at the wooden statue of the former ruler to make a stake to kill herself. Just as she's about to do it, Romeo awakens and stops her. They were able to carry out their plan and run away together. They lived off of animal blood happily for many years and also had a little boy they named Laurence after the Friar. This book completed the story for me. I absolutely loved how she ended it. As much as I love Shakespeare's original, the ending was so sad (I know, duh it's a tragedy, it's supposed to be sad) and left me with an empty feeling inside. They didn't get their happily ever after. They were just dead and gone. I know I'll be keeping this book for a very long time and will re-read it many more times. :) less
