review 1: This is the first book in the Franklin School Friends series by Boulder, Colorado author, Claudia Mills. Kelsey is a third-grade student who loves to read and becomes very focused and intent on being the student in her class who read the most books during a school-wide reading contest. I think this book will mostly appeal to other kids who love to read. The plot includes many children's titles and I bet readers will like finding books that they have already read or discovering new titles that they might want to check out.I liked that Kelsey uses kindness and patience to help her classmate, Cody, read books at his level. Nevertheless, I found it not very plausible that this boy would all of a sudden have the stamina to read 11 books with Kelsey, nonstop. Probably my fa... morevorite part of the book is the math problem that Kelsey and her friends write and solve to discover if their classmate Simon is really reading the books he records."If Simon reads 5 hours a day, how many pages would he have to read per minute? IS HE OR IS HE NOT CHEATING?If I were discussing this book with a class of students, it would be good to discuss the behaviors of a reader. Where do they read? Do you need large blocks of time to read or do avid readers use "edge times", reading while in the car, or waiting for a concert to begin? Do kids who enjoy books, like to talk about them as much as they like to read them? Do readers build reading communities or is reading a solo activity? If you were Kelsey, what titles would you suggest for Annika who likes math? What titles might Izzy, a runner, enjoy?
review 2: This is the first in a new series "Franklin School Friends". It is a transitional (first chapter) book with about 120 pages and black and white illustrations. Kelsey is in 3rd grade and loves to read so she is really excited when a school reading competition is announced. She is sure she will help her class win, but gets frustrated when others in her class do not like reading as much as she does. Kelsey learns a valuable lesson that not everybody has to love the same thing, and as she helps a struggling classmate read a book, she learns it is even fun to share your talents. The next two books in the series are not yet published but they are each about Kelsey's two best friends, Annika Riz and Izzy Barr. Annika is a math whiz and Izzy loves running. It is always great to find some well written transitional readers. less

I worry about the message this book sends about reading being a competitive sport.

Kelsey and her class are in a month-long contest to read 2000 books. Lots of fun!
