review 1: This book has way too much tell rather than show especially in the first few chapters. I also found the hero arrogant and irritating. He shows up out of the blue knowing all about Shawna and demanding she go with him to be trained and used as bait yet never gives Shawna any info about who he is or how he knows about her. Given that Shawna is half vamp half witch and knows about the supernatural there is absolutely no reason other than being a controlling a-hole for him not to give her the info. Shawna started off ok, quite reasonably suspicious of Chad and rejecting his offer but all to soon she is giving lip service to being independent but letting him order her around. I did like Damon and I enjoyed the sub plot with the squire as just waiting around for her dad would ... morenot have been enough tocarry the story. For people who like their heroes arrogant, controlling and patronising - smiling proudly at "their" woman when she is feisty to someone like he is responsible for her behavior.
review 2: I struggled to finish this book. It seemed like a good concept but definitely did not deliver. There were many things that didn't work for me but a major one is the author's constant use of the word "doona" for the Scottish "dinna". For God's sake, do your research! "Doona fetch yourself"?!? Really? I'm highly fashed and what in the hell is a doona anyway? (Apparently, a down comforter). I'm glad this was a free ebook but sorry I wasted my time. Now to re-read Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series for some authentic Scottish language in preparation for the TV mini-series. less
