Pru Marlowe Pet Noir
review 1: As much as I love my cats, I don't ever hope to share thoughts with them. The main character in this mystery series can understand and communicate with animals. With a little pluck she could be a millionaire (see: Dog Whisperer) but Pru Marlowe is scraping by in a small New England town with her cat, Wallis. One of her dog training clients is killed, and the murder is blamed on his rescue dog, a pitbull named Lily. Pru gets involved initially to save the dog from euthanizing, but then events just keep happening, and she finds herself tangled in handsome men, jealous and gorgeous women, and lots of cats and dogs, and one ferret. I don't usually like novels based on animal to human communication, but Clea Simon writes a good basic mystery, and the thoughts of the animal... mores other than Wallis seem almost plausible.
review 2: I'm a fan of quirky noir, but this just veered too far into weird for me. An animal behaviorist student gets a bad flu and suddenly develops animal psychic powers, drops out of school and moves home to take care of her dying mother, the sets up shop as an animal trainer and dog walker. Which might be fine if I weren't thinking every other page that the woman had a nervous breakdown and is just plain nuts. The mystery was all right, nothing too special, but I really couldn't bring myself to like the protagonist. less
