review 1: This was a good read. I enjoyed the plot, even if it was fairly predictable and the characterisation of the two angels was marvellous. I loved how the angels mythology was explained - I like how they aren't religious, but celestial beings who look after people because they feel good doing it. I also found the way they explained how people seemed to use, even burden their guardian angels unduly merely to prove that angels exist.
review 2: CAUTION SPOILERSFreya had an obsession with angels it began with just her sitting by the window waiting for her 'guardian angel' and became an all out obsession claiming she could see them and refusing to leave the window, ever. Out of desperate fear for his daughters health her father lets matters fall into the hands of the ho
... morespital.A year after getting out of hospital all seems perfectly normal Freya had made new friends and lives a perfectly normal obsession-free life. Until she begins to see the dark angel.....To me the author seemed to be trying to blend two different stories of two different genres together one about the mystical world and problems of angels and one about a typical teenage girl trying desperately to fit in with the popular crowd. Which I guess is fine if you like both genres but for me seemed to weaken the story a little bit. It also throws a third story in seen through the eyes of her brother which seems completely irrelevant until the very end where still it doesn't have much importance. At times it kind of seemed as if mcNish was trying to squeeze a few lessons on friendship and bullying into the story. I also couldn't find any sympathy for the characters, they all seemed very OTT for me like 'I can jump out of this window for nadiel will provide' and 'I'm too wierd I will now light a fire to burn my angel stuff and attempt to kill myself'. It was also wierd the way Stephanie and sometimes freya too talked about each other as if they were soulmates or lovers or something. I also found her becoming an angel predictable as well as maastral (or whatever he was called) turning good again at the end. I also found certain parts of the ending unnecessary like the kiss between Freya and maastral was not needed. On the whole there isn't a whole lot I liked about this book. The characters all seemed very weak and wimpy and I kept expecting a twist which didn't come. I found the whole faith thing cringeworthy and awkward. less
