review 1: I'm sorry to say that I gave up on this book. I got about half way through and, considering it's only 200 pages, I thought it would be a quick read. But for such a short book more and more characters were being introduced and I just didn't care because the first character that I read about seemed really interesting and then he disappeared from the story.Oh well, so much more to read on my shelf.....
review 2: Clyde Edgerton is a special writer. Walking Across Egypt was my intro (laughed out loud) and then Redeye....He has such a different - light-hearted, yet serious - way of writing that one learns to sit back and relax with it. He invites us to reminisce, yet allows us to insert own imagination and engage during a scene when things seem to just beckon us
... more to become part of. I reacted to so many chapters in The Night Train and reflected on my own aweness during this time period regarding historical happenings, musical recordings and racism at the time...kudos to you again, Clyde Edgerton! Your simple language is not to be taken lightly! less

Great novel. Understanding major and minor scales, and 1963, enriches the experience of the book.
