review 1: In "The Darker Side," the third novel featuring FBI Special Agent Smoky Barrett, Barrett and her team are called to Washington, DC to deal with a homicide that could be potentially explosive for one of the country's rising political stars. What they find, however, makes it nearly impossible to keep the lid on; the victim, the transsexual child of a leading candidate for higher office, appears to be the latest in a very, very long string of murders linked together by the killer's calling card. Worse, there are more deaths to come.Although he can clearly construct a propulsive story, "The Darker Side" represents lost ground for author Cody McFadyen. The internal life of Smoky Barret remains rich, but the meager depth with which he began imbuing the two-dimensional support... moreing cast in the preceding book seems to have been not just forgotten, but abandoned. Everyone around Smokey can be summed up in an adjective or two, and he leaves a number of potentially interesting plot threads completely unaddressed after introducing them. Worse, while McFadyen clearly deals in sensationalist page-turners - and there is certainly nothing wrong with that - the level of melodrama and the number of incredible personal revelations revealed have the plot tottering off the wrong side of the thin line between willing suspension of disbelief and eye-rolling exasperation. This series showed enough promise in the first book to make me willing to forgive that volume's shortcomings and investigate the sequel, which was well above average and seemed to indicate the author was on a trajectory I found appealing. This third novel, however, appears to indicate that that was a fluke, and after reading the over-the-top jacket synopsis for the fourth entry in the series, I've decided to give Smoky Barrett a pass from here on out.
review 2: “Dreams evolve, not always for the better.”Found an awesome series to read through. I loved this book. Maybe it’s because I very much admire the character of the protagonist, Agent Smoky Barret (what a name, ha?) who has a terribly long scar that meanders through her face (courtesy of an earlier villain), that would make the Joker’s, look like a joke. She is the leader of a team of agents who are vibrant characters themselves, and together, somehow, despite their differences, the four of them make a perfect crime solving unit. Brilliantly written, and at times, humorous to the point of insanity, it not only gives the crime and the investigation, but also an insight into the lives of the agents. The story stops dead in the midst of conversations, to give descriptions, or flashbacks or introductions, which is very refreshing and doesn’t feel like a break at all, because the conversation just picks up from where it was left off. “... wonder what it was like to be killed in the midst of nowhere, to have only solitude as a cathedral for your screams...”My favourite quote would be: “Mom kept our feet on the ground which was important, but dad kept our heads in the clouds, which had its own value.” It summarises perfectly, the relationship our protagonist had with her parents. To be honest, the plot, I felt was alright, good enough to be a good thriller, but a great one? I’ll let you be the judge of that. less
