review 1: As part of my 'read all the books I can' binge, I picked this up, because I don't normally read crime fiction, or mystery fiction, and a humerous book seemed the best way to get into the genre. This is, in my inexperienced opinion, a very good book. It's very funny, I liked the main character because, unlike many other 'socially maladgusted' characters, he didn't come off as a dick. I loved the first few chapters, the little mysteries and funny little call backs to things like the trousers and the painted bridge. The tone and pace were good, I read the book very quickly, as I couldn't bring myself to put it down. The only points it fell down on were, for me, the main, big mystery wasn't much of a mystery. I didn't guess what was going on, but, it wasn't much of a reveal - esp... moreecially with all the fuss made about an Agatha Cristie style party-reveal. It needed something a little more subtle, and a little more shocking. Also, I almost threw the book across the room when I read the last page. Authors should not tell you how annoying cliffhangers are, and then proceed to leave you on one. I'm toying with the idea of buying the next book but...I probably won't, just because of how this one ended.
review 2: I picked up Bateman's second book, The Day of the Jack Russell, on a whim and loved it, so I went back for the first in the series. I really enjoy the fact that Bateman offers something different to other crime books by way of wit and a protagonist who isn't a beefed up 6 foot something hot guy. Having said that I must admit that I did get annoyed with his constant moaning by the end of the book. I found that the mysteries themselves weren't twisty or complex but they were definitely entertaining. The "Comedy" element isn't supposed to be laugh-out-loud but subtle and witty. All in All Mystery Man was a good book. less

It started well, but by the end of the book I just wanted to strangle the protagonist.

Love the setting (bookstore in Belfast) and Bateman's offbeat sense of humor!

Mildly humorous, but too flighty for my tastes. Life's too short. Moving on.
