Meet the Social Media Team

This year, the team handling a lot of the social media (and writing blog posts) are the students you see above and below. We’re all studying at Melbourne Uni to get a Masters of Science. Our backgrounds and fields are all different and we will be posting about our research in the lead up to the Festival so you can get to know us better.

From left to right we have: Patrick, Andre, Yang, Harriet, Michelle, and Julian

We got involved with AstroLight as part of a science communication subject, which teaches us methods and best practices for talking/writing about science when the audience is people like you! Jenny Martin is the lecturer for the subject and is a great communicator of science herself. Hear her Sunday mornings on 3RRR talking science, or look at her blog or twitter (@scidocmartin).

Patrick is doing his Masters in computer science, and is interested in machine learning and data mining. He is now working on analyzing social media data to determine causing factors of Type-1 diabetes in Australia.

Andre is studying physics, and is part of the Cybernetics research group. He is currently working on developing the next generation of materials for brain-machine interfaces.

Yang is in the physical chemistry group. She is mainly working on trapping small particles using a laser beam as part of the Ultrafast and Microspectroscopy laboratory.

Harriet is investigating the impact that street lights have on animals’ abilities to think and learn in our cities. You can find out more through Twitter.

Michelle looks at soil ecology and agriculture, important studies for a sustainable food supply, both on Earth and in space!

When not communicating science in such programs as Telescopes in Schools, Julian is studying astrophyiscs, focussing on avalanches in neutron stars.
