Wildwood Chronicles
review 1: Under Wildwood ended with a bleak cliffhanger, our heroes were split up both Prue and Curtis seemed to be on dangerous ground and the fate of Wildwood was more than uncertain.Wildwood Imperium spans the three books, tangling it all together into a strange Ivy beast. Which is a double-edged ...leaf. On one hand it was satisfying to have all the disparate characters, events and everything come together. On the other hand at times I felt certain aspects got lost in the mix. I think having so many elements also added to the rushed ending of the novel. As we got close to the end of the novel I kept wondering just how everything could be wrapped up in so few pages. The truth is that Meloy's expansive world and epic plot kept growing like ivy and really spilled out of the con... morefines of the book. So much needed to happen that it ended up happening outside the nearly 600 pages of the book.Despite that, I really enjoyed every bit of the book. Although the first book will remain my favorite by far of the series, I would recommend this series to others, whatever it lacked in precise planning is more than made up for in lovely prose, wonderful characters and a beautiful and lush world of imagination.Although I very much enjoyed listening to the audio versions of the two previous books, I couldn't wait for audio to come to the library so I read it aloud with my family. Which was still pretty enjoyable, my brother doing his best Colin Meloy impression. Which is to say, four grown adults laughed, smiled and demanded this book be read to them, all four avid readers who can be hard on lesser works. So, yes, certainly if one's family enjoyed Harry Potter, the Mysterious Benedict Society or anything by Jonathan Stroud, Meloy writes a great family read to be enjoyed by all ages.
review 2: Though not a bad book, this was my least favorite of the trilogy. I felt distanced from the characters for the first half of the book. The story jumps in where book two leaves off, and I could have used a little more reintroduction. But the second half of the book was better. The pace of the book does not slow down, but I felt in-step with the characters again.I enjoy Meloy’s storytelling and imagination. less
