review 1: McCann's form and style is truly innovative, but he takes it upon himself to absolutely bury it underneath supposedly astounding but entirely one-dimensional characters, situations that take far too long to come together, and the allure of a famous event that only gets mentioned every 50 pages. The novel is a little out of chronological order, and if you try to piece it together, it doesn't even fit! The "Centavo" chapter, logically, takes place both before the accident and a week later. McCann's lack of oversight in the novel is abysmally diminishing. I was let down on almost every page. How this won the National Book Award is beyond me, I guess it's their "Crash"
review 2: I loved the way this story unfolded and the writing and the characters. It all revolve
... mores around a day in NYC when someone walked on a tightrope between the two world trade center towers. I actually remember this happening! Though, I knew little about the man who did it, or the full story. Though much of the true story of that walk was fictionalized, it was very compelling to read. I was enthralled by how he wove the stories and the characters together. I know this has been done in other stories, but it was masterful here. less

Normally I like pretentious books, but this just didn't do anything for me.
