review 1: Fire and Forget is an important contribution to our growing body of Iraq/Afghanistan vet-lit. I am so struck by the disconnect between the dark and painful personal consequences of these wars for the warriors who actually fought them and the arrogant pomposity of the men whose lies started and sustained this national tragedy. These stories hurt, they shock and they should leave us humbled by the courage of these men and women, yet angry at ourselves- we who allowed their patriotism to be squandered so heedlessly.
review 2: The first story is perhaps the least strong, in terms of writing, which is unfortunate. Overall, a moving set of pieces, though some were considerably better than others ("Tips for a Smooth Transition," "Play the Game," "Poughkeepsie," and "
... moreWhen Engaging Targets, Remember," were the stand outs). Running themes are the difficulty (impossibility) of reconnecting with loved ones when back home, the difficulty of reconciling the year deployed with civilian life after, and the physical and psychological atmosphere of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. By the end of the book it felt like there were missing perspectives. less

Phil Klay's "Redeployment" was too much of an act to follow...
