review 1: Had a hard time finishing the book. I understand that the author wanted to introduce all the characters, build up a fantasy world, integrate a lot of storylines and make it all a cohesive unit, but sadly didn't quite accomplished it. Between the multiple POV's and different ongoing storylines, it was at times tedious to follow. I just couldn't get into it, and the whole thing just fell flat for me. There were scenes that I would've preferred to be deleted or to have the approach change, sadly it was like a novella all smashed into one.Sorry guys, this book just didn't do it for me. I finished it just to see where it all lead and I was not satisfied. However, don't let my review dissuade you into checking it out. Just because it didn't work for me, doesn't mean it won't for... more you.All in all my rating is as follows:PLOT: 3 1/2 CHARACTERS: 2 1/2STORYLINE: 3OVERALL: 3 STARS
review 2: This was the first book by this author that I read and I loved this world she created. I found the heroine to be unique and interesting and all the other cultures introduced too. What I struggled with was the way the author created a character who is basically a complete victim, owned and abused her whole life, but with a streak of independence and intelligence that goes beyond all that. I don't really understand how a character who basically knows and believes she is smarter than those around her she doesn't like or respect, stays confined within a cage of victim-mode limitations. We are led to believe that this main heroine has a vast intelligence beyond the basics, yet she has zero independent will or thought. For me, though the world is awesome and I enjoy this story enough to absolutely read book 2 when it comes out, I just struggle with this conflict that the heroine has. I am hoping now with book 2, after what happens at the end of book 1, we start to see some real strength come from the heroine where she is absolutely independent from those around her and only chooses to help if she wants to. less
