review 1: I was disappointed in this one -as the beginning sets it up to be an erotic book. A king, forced to give up his male lover and marry a woman to produce an heir. Many years later she dies, and he is now able to get a concubine. It's all he can think about. It's the total focus of the book - but there is one sex scene at the very end. It's odd that this book feels like it should be erotic but then it isn't. Otherwise it's the two of them dancing around each other and basically in love from page one. Anti-climatic. And Arend, the king, didn't act like a king. Or at least, we didn't get to see him be a king. I think we needed to see that side to him - it wasn't believable.I liked these two, but I kept waiting for more to happen in the story. And nothing hap... morepens.
review 2: 3.5 stars - But don't let that turn you away! This is a terrific start to a series, with crazy hot UST and two interesting, complicated men. I have high hopes for the rest of the series and will definitely buy more from this author. Once the book got rolling, I couldn't put it down. That said, there were significant editing issues, including one passage where it isn't clear who's speaking. The setup to keep them apart at the beginning seemed a bit contrived in a soap opera-ish way. Ultimately, this is a real diamond in the rough. There's a great story here that stumbles a bit along the way. I can't wait to see what comes next! less
