Most people only know one London; but what if there were several? Kell is one of the last Travelers—magicians with a rare ability to travel between parallel Londons. There’s Grey London, dirty and crowded and without magic, home to the mad king George III. There’s Red London, where life and magic are revered. Then, White London, ruled by whoever has murdered their way to the throne. But once upon a time, there was Black London…*
Oh wow I loved this book! My first read of 2018 was definitely not a disappointing one. I know, I know, I’m very much behind on the V.E. Schwab train but let me say – this book is definitely worth the hype.
Schwab’s worldbuilding is just incredible, I felt fully immersed in her intricate and incredibly original world. Each London was built fantastically and I can’t wait to see how she builds upon this in the rest of the series (which I hope to be picking up ASAP). Her two main characters, Delilah Bard and Kell, were so much fun. I love how Schwab reverses typical gender roles, allowing for her female lead to be a somewhat violent badass and her male lead to be a bit more emotional and sensitive. I also cannot wait to get to know Rhy a little better as the series progresses because, from what I’ve seen of him already, I think he’ll end up being a favourite of mine. As for the plot, I thought it was incredibly original, however I felt it was initially a little slow moving. I definitely think the beginning could have been a little faster-paced but after the first hundred pages or so the plot picks up and doesn’t slow down until the final pages.
Overall, I loved this read, Schwab’s immersive writing and original plot make this novel definitely worth picking up.
I gave this novel: 4 stars
