review 1: This was a quick, easy-to-read, heartfelt book about Irene, a 13 year old from Manhattan who has her whole life uprooted one summer. Her father loses his job and her family must make some tough decisions financially. They move to her Grandfather's country house for the summer, a place where Irene finally feels at home, finally feels in control. She makes new friends and learns to stand up for herself. Great book for preteens. Clean read with a good message.
review 2: Ages 10-14. Irene is angry when her father loses his job, and they have to sell their posh Manhattan apartment and move to her grandfather's farm in the country. She loves her grandfather, and she loves the farm, but she misses her old life and her New York friends, who would never understand her e... morembarrassing situation. Trying to make the best of things, Irene helps her grandfather in his greenhouse and discovers that she really enjoys getting her hands dirty. Her father seems more at ease, too, in old work clothes. Her free-spending mother is the only one who can't seem to adapt to their new situation. Irene even makes new friends in town--Meg, and her older brother Jim, who Irene falls for. Then her mother arranges to use a city apartment while the owners are in Europe for a year, and Irene's life is turned upside-down again. What does she really want? And how can she convince her parents to let her have it? What bothered me most about this story was that this displaced rich kid doesn't once miss her cell phone and computer. less
