review 1: First, Corwyn Alvarez's "The Dog Walker" is hard to put down. It is engaging and excellent at giving its readers a genuine look into the human experience. Furthermore, Alvarez's novel is a fantastic literary character study. No words or scenes are wasted in telling the story of Benny and those around him. No matter how much is written about any given character, Alvarez is able to give the reader a good sense of who the character is, even if he only gives us a peek into a particular character's life/personality. The reader feels satisfied with what he/she has been given.In addition, though Benny is slightly intellectually challenged, his character is quite observant. Benny has a somewhat childlike way of thinking that shows an untainted clarity. The reader will love him, fe... moreel sympathy for him, want to be his friend, and want to parent him.I truly believe that this book should be required reading for any student enrolled in a creative writing program. It is not only entertaining, but future writers and writers in training can truly learn something from Alvarez.
review 2: Hmmmm, I admit I enjoyed reading this book. Yes, it was an easy read. No, it's not great literature. But there was something in the protagonist's voice that won me over - he's a 17 yr old High School dropout that's supposedly kind of mentally impaired, but is older than his years and wiser than his IQ. His observations of life are always interesting, the story wasn't saccharine, and I like dogs as much as Benny. So, for me, it was win-win. I would read another book by this author - I think this is the first? less
